Newmont Halts Tanami Gold Mine Operations After Fatal Accident

Newmont has suspended all operations at its Tanami underground gold mine in Australia’s Northern Territory following the death of a worker on Wednesday. The world’s largest gold miner confirmed the site remains closed while authorities conduct an investigation into the incident.

In an official statement released Thursday, the company confirmed that all activities at the Tanami site were halted immediately. Newmont representatives noted that relevant regulatory authorities are currently on-site to assess the situation. "Further information will be provided when it is appropriate to do so," the company stated, emphasizing that safety protocols are the current priority.

Impact on Output

The Tanami facility stands as one of Australia’s most productive underground gold operations. According to company data, the mine produced 408,000 troy ounces of gold in 2024. The site continued its high-output trajectory into the following year, reporting 268,000 ounces of production across the first three quarters of 2025.

The suspension comes at a critical time for the producer as it manages its extensive Australian portfolio. While the company has not provided a timeline for a restart, such closures typically persist until initial safety reviews are completed and the site is deemed secure for the workforce.
