Hitachi Energy Targets Ontario for Major Transformer Supply Hub

With electricity demand surging across North America, Hitachi Energy is pouring C$479 million into a new transformer insulation plant in London, Ontario. The 21,000-square-meter facility marks Canada’s first domestic production site for pressboard and laminates, aimed at shortening supply chains for critical power grid infrastructure by 2028.

The project secures a total of C$50 million in government backing, split between federal and provincial funds, including C$20 million from Ottawa’s Strategic Response Fund. By localizing the production of essential insulation components, the company intends to alleviate bottlenecks for power transformers, which are currently strained by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence data centers and widespread industrial electrification efforts.

This London site serves as a cornerstone of Hitachi Energy’s broader commitment to invest over $2 billion into the North American supply chain through 2027. The expansion builds on earlier regional moves, such as the acquisition of local manufacturer Canduct and efforts to scale up power transformer production capacity at their existing facility in Varennes, Quebec. These investments reflect a concerted effort to move beyond relying on imported materials for grid modernization projects.
