BlackRock Eyes Tokenized Funds as Collateral for Wall Street Trades

BlackRock is pushing to integrate tokenized investment funds into the machinery of traditional financial markets, exploring their use as collateral for trades. While the firm has already successfully deployed such assets within crypto-native ecosystems, moving into conventional Wall Street infrastructure presents a more complex set of regulatory and technical hurdles.

BlackRock Eyes Tokenized Funds as Collateral for Wall Street Trades

Dan Maley, the firm’s head of cash management for Asia Pacific, indicated that the asset manager is looking beyond simple digital representations of products. The goal is to allow investors to leverage fund holdings to secure loans or derivatives positions without the friction of redeeming them for cash. By utilizing blockchain-based shares, BlackRock aims to streamline how institutions manage liquidity and secure trading positions in a 24/7 environment.

This strategy builds on existing precedents, most notably the BUIDL fund, which currently allows institutional traders on Binance to use tokenized holdings as off-exchange collateral. However, applying this model to traditional finance requires navigating rigid standards set by clearinghouses, custodians, and brokers. While BlackRock recently expanded its tokenized offerings—including a major European rollout covering USD 311 billion in assets—these programs operate alongside traditional transfer-agent infrastructure rather than replacing it. For now, the transition from crypto-collateral to broad institutional adoption hinges on whether traditional clearinghouses agree to recognize these blockchain-based shares as eligible security for their own risk frameworks.
