Antero agreed to pay a $3.8 million civil penalty to address alleged violations of federal and state air pollution laws at its production sites in West Virginia and Ohio. According to the Justice Department, the fine will be split between the federal government and West Virginia, which joined the case as a co-plaintiff.
Infrastructure and Emissions Reductions
Beyond the financial penalty, the settlement mandates that Antero invest approximately $5.8 million into upgrading its operational infrastructure. The company is required to launch projects to assess, modify, and improve vapor control systems at 242 oil and gas facilities. These compliance measures focus on enhancing monitoring and maintenance standards to prevent leaks and ensure consistent regulatory adherence.
The Justice Department expects these initiatives to yield a substantial environmental impact. Once the upgrades are completed, the new systems are projected to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by more than 1,100 tons annually, addressing long-standing concerns regarding the company’s impact on regional air quality.
