The appointment marks a definitive end to the leadership vacancy created when John Geller stepped down at the board's request last year. Avril, 65, brings a deep bench of hospitality experience to the permanent role, having previously led Diamond Resorts International and held senior executive positions at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. According to a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Avril’s new contract includes a $1.1 million base salary supplemented by performance-based bonuses and long-term equity awards.
Strengthening the Executive Suite
Joining Avril is Mike Flaskey, 58, who takes over as president and COO after a tenure as chief executive of Hornblower Group. Flaskey’s career spans more than 25 years, including stints at McKinsey & Company and a previous leadership role at Diamond Resorts. In his new capacity, Flaskey will oversee day-to-day operations with a compensation package featuring a $1 million base salary and eligibility for executive incentive programs.
The leadership shuffle comes as Marriott Vacations navigates a shifting travel landscape. The company stated that Avril’s three decades of experience in the hospitality and vacation-ownership sectors were pivotal in the board's decision to finalize his appointment. Both executives are expected to leverage their extensive industry ties to drive growth for the timeshare operator.
