Aritzia Acquires Iconic Fred Segal Brand to Fuel U.S. Expansion

Vancouver-based retailer Aritzia has acquired the Fred Segal fashion and lifestyle brand, securing the label’s historic flagship location in Los Angeles. The deal, announced Thursday, marks a strategic move to deepen Aritzia's footprint in the American market as it looks to more than triple its store count across the United States.

While financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed, the acquisition includes the 65-year-old brand and the lease for its original flagship at 8100 Melrose Avenue. Aritzia plans to restore the iconic West Coast location, integrating the heritage brand into its broader growth strategy.

A Strategic Push South

The move aligns with Aritzia’s aggressive expansion plan revealed in October, which targets an eventual footprint of approximately 200 locations across the U.S. Currently, the company operates around 130 stores in North America. Although slightly more than half of these locations are in Canada, the majority of the retailer's revenue is now generated south of the border.

To support this rapid scaling, the company is reportedly bolstering its distribution capacity. The Fred Segal acquisition provides Aritzia with immediate cultural capital in the Southern California market, serving as a cornerstone for its wider ambition to dominate the premium segment in major American metropolitan areas.
