AT&T and Amazon Partner to Overhaul U.S. Network Infrastructure

AT&T is migrating its core network workloads to Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of a sweeping modernization deal designed to integrate cloud scale with national fiber and satellite connectivity. The partnership, announced Wednesday, will see the telecommunications giant link AWS data centers with high-capacity fiber while leveraging Amazon’s satellite network to expand its service reach.

The collaboration marks a significant shift for AT&T, which plans to decommission traditional on-premises technologies in favor of AWS’s cloud environment. By moving critical network workloads to the cloud, the telecommunications giant aims to increase operational agility and reduce the infrastructure overhead associated with maintaining legacy hardware.

Under the terms of the agreement, AT&T will also deploy high-capacity fiber to connect AWS data center locations across the country. This physical infrastructure layer is intended to ensure low-latency communication between the cloud provider's hubs and the broader telecommunications network.

Expanding Reach via Space and Fiber

The partnership extends beyond terrestrial hardware. Amazon’s satellite internet service, referred to as Leo, will provide AT&T with additional connectivity options. This multi-layered approach combines satellite, fiber, and cloud to create what AT&T Senior Vice President Shawn Hakl described as a more resilient and intelligent connectivity ecosystem.

The companies plan to reveal further technical specifications and deployment timelines during the Mobile World Congress 2026, which is scheduled for early March. The event will likely serve as a roadmap for how the two giants intend to integrate their respective technologies at scale.
