Meta Commits $10 Billion to Massive AI Data Center in Indiana

Meta Platforms has officially broken ground on a $10 billion data center in Lebanon, Indiana, a cornerstone of the company’s aggressive push to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure. The facility, designed to support one gigawatt of capacity, represents a significant escalation in Meta’s capital spending as it integrates generative AI into its global advertising ecosystem.

The Indiana expansion follows Meta’s recent announcement that its capital expenditures could reach $135 billion this year. According to Rachel Peterson, Meta’s vice president for data centers, high-capacity sites are essential for meeting the soaring compute demands of the company’s newest AI models. Located roughly 30 miles from Indianapolis, the Lebanon site marks Meta’s second major investment in the state, following an existing project in Jeffersonville.

Economic and Infrastructure Scale

The project is expected to generate significant local employment, supporting more than 4,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent operational roles. While Meta has not yet disclosed a specific completion date, the scale of the facility aligns with the company's broader strategy to fortify the hardware backbone required for its core business operations and future AI ambitions.

Meta has pledged that the Lebanon facility will achieve LEED Gold Certification, matching 100% of its energy consumption with renewable sources. The company also outlined several environmental and social initiatives aimed at the surrounding community:

    • Restoring all consumed water back to local watersheds.
    • Partnering with Arable to provide irrigation technology to regional farmers.
    • Revitalizing a segment of the local Deer Creek stream.
  • Funding a new workforce development program in Boone County.
By prioritizing sustainable infrastructure, Meta aims to mitigate the heavy environmental footprint typically associated with gigawatt-scale data centers. The company stated it will continue to invest in local watersheds and clean energy grids to offset the massive power requirements of its evolving AI hardware.
