Tesla Crypto Futures Retreat After Roadster Thruster Reveal

Tesla-linked perpetual futures on Hyperliquid pulled back to roughly $357, erasing an overnight rally that briefly pushed prices toward $380 following Elon Musk’s demonstration of a thruster-equipped Roadster. The market reversal highlights investor volatility ahead of the company’s third-quarter financial results scheduled for release on October 21.

The TSLA-USDC contract on Hyperliquid saw its mark price drop $3.42 over a 24-hour window, settling below the level where the recent advance began. While the contract had climbed from $360 to $380 on October 16, it failed to break through earlier weekly highs. Data from RootData confirms a broader cooling across crypto-linked markets, with Binance’s TSLAUSDT contract falling 0.85% to $357.26, and other platforms reporting declines between 0.84% and 1.30%.

Trading volume remains concentrated on Binance, which recorded $564.49 million in turnover compared to Hyperliquid’s $246.64 million. However, Hyperliquid currently holds the largest open interest at $80.12 million. These independently deployed contracts allow for up to 20 times leverage but do not grant ownership of actual Tesla shares or rights to corporate dividends, a structure that has previously faced scrutiny following pricing disruptions in other assets on the platform.

The volatility follows a high-profile presentation at SpaceX’s McGregor facility, where Musk showcased a redesigned Roadster featuring cold-gas thrusters. Despite the demonstration of sub-one-second acceleration, the vehicle carries a new production target of 2028, eight years past the original 2020 delivery promise. Investors are now shifting focus toward Tesla’s upcoming earnings report, which follows a third quarter marked by 486,532 vehicle deliveries and 13.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage deployment.
