BlackRock Files for Bitcoin ETF With Built-in Loss Mitigation

BlackRock has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, a proposed fund designed to cap potential losses while simultaneously limiting investor gains. The product seeks to navigate Bitcoin's volatility through a complex strategy of options linked to the firm's existing spot ETF.

The proposed fund, designated under the ticker PBIT, deviates from standard spot Bitcoin ETFs by avoiding direct cryptocurrency holdings. Instead, the strategy utilizes derivatives linked to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) alongside a portfolio of cash and short-term fixed-income securities. By purchasing and selling call options, the fund aims to soften the blow of market downturns while sacrificing a portion of the upside when Bitcoin prices rally.

BlackRock’s prospectus outlines a structure involving overlapping options tranches, each intended to provide a buffer against approximately 10% of downside exposure relative to the asset's starting value. However, the firm cautions that these figures do not constitute a fixed guarantee. Because the fund manages multiple tranches with varying expiration dates and exercise prices, actual investor returns may diverge significantly from the initial protection levels. During periods of severe volatility or market stress, the mechanism may fail to perform as expected, leaving shareholders exposed to losses.

The filing marks a continuation of BlackRock’s expansion into specialized cryptocurrency products, following the launch of the income-focused BITA fund. While the new registration details the technical framework for PBIT, several key aspects remain undisclosed, including the management fee and the specific exchange where the fund would trade. As of the October 19 filing, the product awaits regulatory effectiveness, with the company noting that final portfolio weights and performance caps will be established closer to a potential launch date.
