Swiss Regulator Clears First Retail Spot Bitcoin ETF

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority has authorized the nation’s first spot Bitcoin fund designed specifically for retail investors. By granting an exemption to standard diversification rules, the regulator allows this vehicle to hold Bitcoin directly under the country’s collective investment scheme framework, marking a shift from existing debt-based crypto products.

While Switzerland has hosted cryptocurrency-linked exchange-traded products on the SIX Swiss Exchange since 2018, those offerings function as collateralized debt securities. The new regulatory approval elevates the product to an investment fund, which carries distinct legal protections and obligations. FINMA justified the relaxation of risk-spreading requirements by pointing to Bitcoin’s established trading history and high liquidity levels compared to other digital assets.

Despite the formal approval, the regulator maintains that the product does not mitigate the inherent volatility of the underlying asset. Authorized institutions distributing the fund must adhere to the Swiss Financial Services Act, which mandates rigorous suitability assessments and clear risk disclosures at the point of sale. These documents must explicitly warn that the fund’s status as a regulated vehicle offers no safety net against market-driven capital losses.

FINMA has not yet disclosed the identity of the fund manager, the ticker symbol, or the expected launch date. The regulator confirmed that several other applications are currently under review, though it remains tight-lipped regarding the specific entities involved. This decision follows a 2021 precedent where the authority approved a crypto-focused fund, though that vehicle was strictly limited to qualified investors rather than the broader retail market.
